Maternity Bathing Suits – What are my Choices?
Pregnancy is hard enough, but being pregnant through summer can be very uncomfortable. You feel the heat more because you are carrying extra weight and it is certainly harder to find ways to cool down. Of course, one of the best ways to cool your body is to get into a pool and keep your body fully submerged in the cool water until you feel more comfortable. Not so long ago, there was no such thing as maternity bathing suits, but these days there is a range of attractive, comfortable bathing suits for pregnant women.
As well as being an ideal way to keep cool, swimming is excellent exercise, especially for pregnant women, because it is non-weight bearing exercise and allows for a greater range of movement. Continuing with some form of light exercise is important through your pregnancy because it improves your general health and fitness, lifts your mood, works your cardiovascular system and helps you maintain a satisfactory weight.
If summer is at the start of your pregnancy, you might not need to buy a maternity bathing suit. There are lots of styles of tankinis around; just get one in a larger size to accommodate your increased bust size, and it will probably get you through until the cooler weather. Look for a tankini that has a roomy top to fit your enlarging belly; bikini bottoms rather than full-sized briefs may be more comfortable for you in the early months as well.
However, if you are going to be into your second trimester when summer comes, you might want to invest in a maternity swim suit. You will find there are many different styles and colors available from specialty maternity shops, department and chain stores and online maternity sites. Go into a store and try on different styles to see what fits you best and suits you. Look for designs that will grow with you so that you will get full use from the bathing suit. When you know what size you need and what styles suit you, you can then search online to see if you can save some money.
Maternity bathing suits come in one and two piece designs, in a wide range of fashionable fabrics and colors, so you will have plenty to choose from. Most women tend to prefer the two piece styles, as they are more comfortable to wear. One of the most adaptable styles is the tankini, which consists of panties and a top that covers them. You can choose bikini pants or a fuller brief, whichever you feel more comfortable in. The top of the tankini may be straight or full to either fit around your belly or hang loosely over it.
Some pregnant women choose to wear a normal bikini, and show their pregnant bulge off. If you are comfortable wearing this style then go for it, you will be in good company. Whatever style or design you decide to wear in maternity bathing suits, make sure it fits you well, will grow with you and, most important of all, allows you to be comfortable and confident.
Be sure to check with your doctor about the safety of swimming at different stages of your pregnancy. Still water is fine, but you may be advised to stay out of rough surf. After you swim in chlorine water, be sure to shower thoroughly to remove all traces of chemical.
